This investment aims to further strengthen Austria’s leadership position in the semiconductor industry and is expected to create 250 new jobs in the coming years.
He current state of the global semiconductor market underscores the importance of future investments in innovative key technologies. In light of this, the European Commission has set forth an ambitious goal aimed at promoting large-scale semiconductor production in Europe, with plans to increase the global market share to 20% by 2030 and achieve breakthroughs in next-generation chip technologies. This initiative has led to the creation of the European Chips Act.
Osram’s investment will enhance Europe’s autonomy in semiconductor production and digitalization, making significant contributions to the “green transformation.”
Aldo Kamper, CEO and Chairman of the Board of Osram Group, expressed
The completion of our new headquarters factory will provide us with more innovation space to meet the growing demands of our customers and to increase production in Europe. At the same time, our investment clearly expresses our strong support for Premstätten as a business hub, Styria as a high-tech industrial zone, and Austria as an innovation and production base. We will establish ourselves here, promote digitalization in line with the European Green Deal, and strive to maintain Europe’s technological sovereignty.
Austrian Federal Minister of Labor and Economic Affairs Martin Kocher stated:
Austria is one of the leading countries in the field of microchips in Europe, ensuring long-term employment stability and economic prosperity. With outstanding technical expertise and strong innovation capabilities, Austria’s semiconductor industry continues to enhance its competitiveness in international markets. Therefore, we are fully leveraging the enormous opportunities this industry brings to our country, economy, and workforce, consolidating our leading position.
Osram’s announced investment plans will have a significant impact in this regard. The European Chips Act provides a solid framework to accelerate research and development and production. The Austrian federal government is committed to strengthening strategic advantages in this field and has taken concrete actions. Accordingly, the Austrian government has allocated approximately €3 billion in planned budget expenditures until 2031 to further promote the development of Austria’s semiconductor innovation and production ecosystem.
